    WIS maintains a collection of nearly 1.3 million specimens of vascular plants, fungi, algae, bryophytes, and lichens. Plants make up 80% of the collection, but lichens (>150,000) and microfungi (>100,000) are well represented. WIS is a public university herbarium that has served students, faculty, outside researchers, and the public since 1849.
